The first arrival of European explorers started with the arrival of French priests Father Louis Hennepin and Pierre Le Sueur in 1660. European explorer Jonathan Carver came in, as did other explorers who paddled their canoes across Lake Superior or up the Mississippi River. Later, George Head, an immigrant from New York, brought his entire family and laid claim to a chunk of land that he named Rochester. He set up Head’s Tavern and marked the beginning of Rochester. In 1864, the Winona and St. Peter Railroad started its service in the area and opened it up for business opportunities. It would change hands three years later to be run by the Chicago & Northwestern Transportation Company. This presented farmers and traders with a better opportunity to bring goods to a national market. Olmsted County, named after the first mayor of St. Paul David Olmsted, was created. Rochester was made the county seat, and in 1858, it was incorporated as a city. The availability of cheap, arable land drew many settlers to Rochester. All these factors worked together to make Rochester a vibrant regional hub with an urban feel. The population grew rapidly to more than 5,000 people. Doctor Mayo’s clinic and all others set up in the area made an outstanding contribution to its growth. Collaboration and partnerships with other doctors morphed into the concept of a group of medical practitioners working together. This brought about peer-to-peer strength in solving some of the most challenging situations. Practitioners became pioneers and trailblazers of medical practices and technologies in the 20th century.
