History

History

minnesota history

Before the first Europeans arrived and settled, Minneapolis was territory belonging to the Dakota Sioux people. The first French explorers arrived in the 1680s, but no major settlements were established. It was many years later in 1819 when the first settlement was established at Fort Snelling. In the 1870s, lumber was Minneapolis’ primary industry. Between the years 1880 and 1930, Minneapolis was the world leader in flour milling. Fast forward another few decades to the 1950s and 1960s which saw Minneapolis undergoing heavy urban renewal. All of this change has made Minneapolis the city it is today – a major industrial, commercial and cultural hub for the Midwest states.

Location

Located on the shores of the Mississippi River, Minneapolis is often referred to as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes.” The city is located in the southern third of the state’s eastern border. The city’s rolling plains, waterways and northerly location provide warm summers but cold and snowy winters. January is the coldest month, with overnight lows averaging around 7 degrees F and about 52 inches of snow during the season. In the summer, Minneapolis has approximately 198 sunny days and sees summer highs of around 84 degrees F. In an average year, Minneapolis sees just 32 inches of precipitation. Minneapolis and the Twin Cities Metro Area has many diverse neighborhoods. Some of the best neighborhoods for buying land in Minneapolis are listed below. Minneapolis Neighborhoods Carag / South Uptown The neighborhood of Carag, or South Uptown, is a reasonably priced neighborhood. Most of the residents here tend to be younger and attending college or university. Cedar Riverside Cedar and Riverside are two neighborhoods rolled into one. Both are both great spots for buying land in Minneapolis. If you enjoy diversity with a mix of a few arts and entertainment attractions, including the House of Balls Art Gallery, these neighborhoods may be perfect for you. Elliot Park The neighborhood of Elliot Park is very popular with young professionals due to the number of parks and cafes. If you are looking for land in Minneapolis situated among the historic row houses, this may be a good place to start. Fulton Fulton is located in the southwest of the city and is a great place to buy land in Minneapolis. Tucked between more established neighborhoods such as Linden and Lynnhurst, Fulton has plenty of mixed residential and commercial properties and plots of land. King Field The King Field neighborhood is named after King Field Park, which was named after civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King. A quarter of the residential properties in this neighborhood are either mid-rise or high-rise. If you are lucky enough to buy a piece of land in this neighborhood, your money will go quite far. Linden Hills Linden Hills is one of the more expensive neighborhoods in Minneapolis, but this is because of its position on Lake Harriet. For a piece of land on water you will always need to pay a higher price, but you still do get a lot for your money. Lynnhurst The Lynnhurst neighborhood is predominantly up-scale and, just like Linden Hills, many of the plots of land for sale offer views of Lake Harriet. This neighborhood has great public transport links to downtown Minneapolis and further afield, so this makes Lynnhurst an ideal spot for commuting into the city. Page You can generally find larger plots of land in the neighborhood of Page, which is located just south of Minnehaha Creek and Diamond Lake Road. Homes in this neighborhood consist of single family dwellings with large yards, so if you are after a bit of privacy and space, be sure to check land for sale in the neighborhood of Page. University Neighborhood The University neighborhood is a popular one, so you may have to look a little harder to find land for sale here. Naturally, most of this neighborhood is occupied by the nearby University of Minnesota, so it offers plenty of museums, cafes and bars for residents.
