Evidence of inhabitation in the area where St. Paul lies today dates back more than 2000 years ago. The first natives of this area include the Sioux, Hopewell, Ojibwe, and Dakota. The purchase of 100,000 acres of land by U.S. Army Lieutenant Zebulon Pike in 1805 marked an essential step in formalizing and modernizing the area. Part of the land he acquired was used to set up Fort Snelling, a crucial support base in future endeavors. Another important figure is Pierre “Pig's Eye” Parrant, a bootlegger who came in as a fur trader. His thriving whiskey business, brush looks, and daring escapades made him remarkably outstanding. He was eventually thrown out in 1840 by his customers, the soldiers at Fort Snelling. But he left a name, as the area was simply Pig's Eye to locals or Pig's Eye Landing. Father Lucien Galtier arrived in 1841 and built a chapel named St. Paul. That's how the growing settlement area changed its name from Pig's Eye to St. Paul. Another important development happened when educator, writer, and activist Harriet Bishop opened the city's first school in 1847. When Minnesota Territory was created in 1849, St. Paul became its capital. The army was instrumental in improving its infrastructure. The next decade opened up the area to unprecedented growth. The city moved with the times, and the 1900s brought in more developments. Higher education was key, with several significant colleges set up before 1905. St. Cathrine University, Hamline University, St. Thomas, Macalester, and others are all trailblazers.
