History of Montana
History of Montana
Today, we'll learn about Montana, a state in the western part of the US. On November 8, 1889, it became a state. It was known as "Montana territory" at the time. It became the 41st state of the United States a year later (on November 1, 1890).
Helena, Montana's capital city, was also designated as the state's territorial capital in 1864. Billings, Montana's largest city, with a population of around 109,000 people (in 2010), was founded in 1882 and is located in the Yellowstone River Valley. The Western Meadowlark is Montana's state bird, and the bitterroot is its state flower.
In 1805, Lewis and Clark set out to explore "the region beyond the mountains," as they called the area that is now Montana. It was named after the US vice president at the time, Steve Montana, when it became a US territory in 1803.
