History of Great Falls

History of Great Falls

montana history

Before the European settlers arrived, the land now known as Great Falls was the territory of the Salish Indian. In the 17th century, Piegan Blackfeet Indians arrived in the area, pushing the Salish into the surrounding mountains. The Piegan Blackfeet claimed the area and it remained their territory even after the US claimed it in 1803 for the Louisiana Purchase. During the 19th century, the land of Great Falls passed through many hands. Until 1854, it was part of the unincorporated frontier, and in 1861 it became part of the Dakota Territory. In 1863, the land was incorporated into the Idaho Territory and, on May 28, 1864, it joined the Montana Territory. When Montana became a state, Great Falls became a part of the state. The settlement of Great Falls was founded by Paris Gibson in 1883, who, when visiting the area, was impressed by the possibility of creating an industrial city near the falls to utilize the power provided by hydroelectricity. In 1890, the construction of a hydroelectric dam within Black Eagle Falls provided the city and the state with the first hydroelectric power. This was just the start of Great Falls becoming a thriving industrial and supply center. With the arrival of the rail network, a strong agricultural market and center for regional shopping, Great Falls continued to grow.
