History of Billings

History of Billings

montana history

Billings, Montana has land that has seen constant growth and development since the day it was established. Located in south-central Montana, the city of Billings was established in 1882. The town Billings was astutely named after Fredrick H. Billings who was the president of Northern Pacific Railway. The city was established to serve as a western railhead with hopes of expanding it further westward. With only three buildings to its name, the small town housed a few families. However, the land seemed to have a desire to prove its worth and within a few months, the population had grown to 2000 people. The seemingly magical appearance of the city overnight inspired the name The Magical City of Montana. Since then, the city has continued to expand and attract people from all over the nation. In 1910, the population reached 10,000 and earned its ranking as the sixth fastest-growing community in the country. However, the growth did not stop there for in later years discovery of natural gas and coal reserves boosted the city's position in the energy industry until it was ranked number one in the entire nation.

Considered the world’s first national park, the place has lodging, camping, dining, as well as astonishing geographical features to witness for adventure seekers. In addition to possessing one of the oldest hot geysers, Old Faithful, the park has eye-opening hot springs, canyons, thriving forests, rivers as well as hundreds of species of wildlife.

By some, the Rimrocks of Billings are considered to be the most defining feature of the city. One of the easiest ways to catch the view of the rocks is through Zimmerman Park, a popular attraction for mountain biking and trailing running. They have formed millions of years ago due to erosion caused by the Yellowstone River and the sediment deposits from the sea. As the level of the ocean gradually dropped, the gorgeous formation was exposed and became a site of national wonder in the city.
