Once called “Montana City,” the replacement name, Denver, was chosen to honor James Denver, the governor of what was then the Kansas territory. The city was established during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush; Colorado enjoyed a major economic ascent because of the burgeoning mining industry within its abundant mountains. During that time, Denver also secured its position as the hub of railroad connections around the United States. In fact, when the railroads arrived between 1870 and 1890, Denver grew from about 5,000 to more than 100,000 people.
