History

Denver began after the 1851 Treaty of Fort Laramie between the United States and various Indian tribes, such as the Arapaho and Cheyenne. Following the treaty in 1851, there was a discovery of gold in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado in November 1858. The gold rush led to a significant White emigration across the Cheyenne and Arapaho lands. In the summer of 1858, a group of gold prospectors from Lawrence, Kansas, established the first settlement, Montana City, as a mining town on the banks of the South Platte River. Montana was the first historical settlement in what would later become Denver. Although the city faded initially, it emerged again in 1859 as a location for immigrants, and Denver started to dominate the region. The creation of Colorado Territory and Arapahoe County took place in 1861, and the state incorporated Denver as a city in November 1861. The city served as the Arapahoe County seat from 1861 until 1902. It also became the acting territorial capital in 1867 and the permanent state capital in 1881. The new titles influenced the city’s growth and expansion in the late 1800s. The city experienced a significant population and economic growth after the rail arrived in the late 19th century. Immigrants from Europe and migrants from the rest of the United States came to the area. Throughout the 20th century, the city’s population increased, which prompted more development in the region.
