History of Denver

History of Denver

Colorado State Capital

The area now known as Denver was first occupied by Arapaho Indians, traders, and fur trappers. Gold was discovered in the city in 1858. A group of prosecutors who were exploring the Kansas territory, which encompassed the area now known as Colorado, discovered tons of gold at the confluence of Cherry Creek and Platte River. Willian Larimer, one of the prosecutors, established Denver's city along the banks of Cherry Creek. The site was named "Denver City" in honor of the then Kansas Territorial Governor James W. Denver. The site grew tremendously during the 1859 "pikes peak or bust" gold rush. The city quickly became a mining site where gold prospectors separated gold from the sands of South Platte and nearby Cherry Creek. Denver City and rival town Auraria consolidated in 1860. Colorado Territory was established in 1861, and Denver City became known as Denver. The city suffered from a devastating fire in 1863, then Flash food that happened the following year swept away many buildings and properties. The construction of the transcontinental built through Wyoming encouraged Denver's citizens to work towards their railroad, which was completed in 1870. As a result of the railroad, the city had a massive population growth from 4,759 in 1870 to 106,713 in 1890.
