History of Morgantown

History of Morgantown

The city is closely related to the Anglo-French struggle for the territory. Before the Treaty of Paris, today's Morgantown was highly contested by the settlers and Native Americans and the English and French soldiers. Although the treaty decided the issue in favor of the English soldiers, the Indian's resistance continued almost till the period of the American Revolutionary war. After the war, many forts such as Fort Pierpont, Coburn, Morgan, Burris, and Kern were constructed. Eventually, Zackquill Morgan settled in the area by establishing a homestead near University Avenue and Fayette Street. Zackquill commissioned William Haymond to inspect his land and divide it into streets and lots. The space was leased by the Virginia Assembly, and the first slot sale took place. The assembly enacted a municipal charter that incorporated the city and named it Morgan's Town after its first settlers. The end result of the Virginia Charter is today's Morgantown.
