History of Morgantown

History of Morgantown

The New Metropolitan Theatre in Morgantown, West Virginia

In Morgantown's early days, there were many struggles for the territory between the English, the French, and the area's Indigenous people. Finally, in 1763, these groups settled their dispute through the Treaty of Paris, which gave rights to the English. Over the next decade, the locals built several forts in the area. Between 1769 and 1774, they constructed Fort Pierport, Fort Coburn, Fort Dinwiddie, Fort Martin, Fort Burris, and Fort Kern in regions that remain in the current city of Morgantown. Although there are some records of attempted settlement before the founding of the city by Zackquill Morgan in 1772, it was only in 1785 that Morgan received a certificate for his land from the Virginia General Assembly to establish the townsite on October 17 of that year. A municipal charter was enacted by the Virginia General Assembly on February 3, 1838, incorporating the city as Morgantown, leading to its incorporation into the newly created state of West Virginia on June 20, 1863. In contemporary Morgantown, you can still see parts of the original town buildings, including the Old Stone House, constructed in 1795, and the John Rogers family home on Foundry Street, which was erected in 1840, both of which are iconic structures.
