Morgantown, WV, is full of history. The first permanent settlers in the area were Joshua Beall and his family, who arrived in 1772. The town was initially called Beallsville but was later renamed Morgantown in honor of Colonel Zackquill Morgan, who played a pivotal role in the American Revolutionary War. In 1769, Morgan led a group of Virginia militiamen in an attack on Fort Pitt, which was then held by the British. The victory at Fort Pitt helped to secure the West for the American colonies, and Morgan was hailed as a hero. He later settled in Morgantown, where he opened a tavern and became one of the town's first postmasters. During the later part of the 19th century, Morgantown snowballed due to its proximity to the newly-built B&O Railroad and the Morgantown lock and dam. In 1872, the town became incorporated, and in 1890 a bridge was built over Cheat Lake, further fueling the town's growth. Morgantown is perhaps best known today for West Virginia University, which started here in 1867 as a land-grant college. Since then, the college has become one of the most prestigious universities in the country and continues to be a significant source of pride for Morgantown residents. Morgantown is also home to several other historical sites and landmarks, including the West Virginia State Capitol Building completed in 1932. The capitol building is notable for its beautiful Art Deco architecture and houses the state legislature and the governor's office.
