History of Provo

History of Provo

utah history

The Timpanogos tribe occupied the area that is now present-day Provo. The area also served as a traditional meeting place for the Ute and Shoshone tribes. The first European to visit the area was Silvestre Velez de Escalante, a Spanish Franciscan missionary explorer in 1776. In 1847, Mormon pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley and settled in the area north of Timpanogos Mountain. The native tribes were friendly to them for a few years, but relations between the settlers and the native tribes deteriorated because of land and livestock disputes. The disputes led to the Provo War and Walker War as the Mormon pioneers tried to push out the native tribes. The area was first named Timpanogos, but the name was later changed to Fort Utah by the Mormon pioneers. In 1850, Fort Utah was renamed Provo after Etienne Provost, a French-Canadian trapper who settled in the area in 1825. More members of the Latter-Day Saints Church arrived in the area, and Provo grew to become a city. The first railroad reached Provo in 1872, the same year that Provo Woolen Mills was opened. Members of the Latter-Day Saints Church contributed to the success of Provo by setting up farms and industrial centers.
