History of Salt Lake County Utah

Utah State Capitol

Salt Lake County was formally declared a county on January 31, 1850. At that time, over 11,000 residents lived in the county. The first formal meeting of the Salt Lake County government was held on March 15, 1852, around 18 months after the Utah Territory was established by the U.S. Congress. Even though cities and small towns now cover most parts of the county, Salt Lake still retains traces of its agricultural past.
The county is a leading producer of hogs, eggs, garden vegetables, and wheat. Previously, Salt Lake County was a regional mining hub. The smelters in Garfield, mines in Alta, and the Salt Lake Mining and Stock Exchange made the county one of the most industrious in the 1800s. Today, printing and publishing, which began in 1850, remains Salt Lake County's major industry. The county manufactures a wide range of goods, including pharmaceuticals, among others.
Thanks to several technology companies in Salt Lake, the county also produces computers, artificial organs, and military guidance systems. Salt Lake remains Utah's leader in services, trade, finance, communications, transportation, construction, and insurance. These features make Salt Lake an ideal place to settle. The rapidly growing economy also makes houses in Salt Lake County highly valuable.

Salt Lake City Utah

Salt Lake County got its name from the Great Salt Lake. The county's close location to this lake inspired early settlers to name it Salt Lake. Originally, the county was named Great Salt Lake County, but that changed later in the 1800s. In 1868, the word "Great" was dropped from the county's and city's names, respectively. After the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe, Utah passed to U.S. sovereignty and later became part of its territory in 1850. Salt Lake County was the territorial capital up to 1896 when it became the new state's capital.
