Provo, UT, was founded in 1849 as a settlement for church members of Jesus Christ who became the Latter Day Saints. However, its heritage goes a long way in history. Provo City is in the Utah Valley, a region directly south of Salt Lake City that belonged to the Ute Indian tribe. The Utes built communities on the Utah Lake to protect themselves against northern tribes and obtain fish, which was their principal food supply. The first non-American Indians to visit Utah Valley were Fathers Escalante and Dominguez, who arrived in 1776. The Spanish, however, were unable to establish a permanent settlement in the region due to their focus on colonization attempts elsewhere. Many fur trappers and traders hunted beavers in Utah Valley throughout the first decades of the nineteenth century. Etienne Provost, a French-Canadian trapper, based in Taos, New Mexico, is said to be the first white man to have discovered the Great Salt Lake. He led a group into the Great Basin in 1824 and came upon a party of Shoshone Indians while camping. The mountain men were allowed inside the Shoshone camp but were cautioned that having metallic things close by was awful luck. In 1849, Mormon pioneers founded Provo as a permanent colony. Until Ogden became a central railroad hub in the 1870s, it was the territory's second-largest city. Brigham Young Academy, the forerunner of today's Brigham Young University, was founded by the pioneers in 1875. It is the largest Christian school of higher learning in the country today, attracting national prominence for both its academic and sports activities. Provo has long been the economic, commercial, and government hub of Utah Valley. For example, the Provo Woolen Mills is the first large factory that opened in 1872 because sheep thrived in Utah's climate. A site on the Provo River was also available to provide power and water to the plant. The LDS Church gathered private donations to construct this mill, which employed over 150 people. Many of its employees were talented immigrant laborers who had previously worked in British textile industries. Today the administrative capital of Utah County is Provo, which also houses the county administration and courts. Provo is now one of the nation's fastest-growing metropolitan regions, with population increases of about 40% between the 1990s and the new century. The area provides people with an excellent quality of life, thanks to its closeness to the Wasatch Mountains and Utah Lake, which offer a variety of recreational and leisure opportunities. Provo is also viewed as one of the most "stress-free" cities in the United States.
