Interested in buying a house in Chattanooga? Compared to bigger cities like Nashville and Memphis, Chattanooga tends to fly slightly under the radar. But do not let that deceive you! The Scenic City is full of gems. Chattanooga has tons to offer residents and tourists, from its gorgeous hiking trails to its picturesque food scene. If you consider buying a house in this city, here are some things you need to know.

History of Chattanooga

History of Chattanooga

tennessee history

Native Americans were the first inhabitants of the Chattanooga area. In 1815, the site was settled when John Ross, who later became Cherokee chief, established a trading post on the river. The post was named Ross's Landing and renamed in 1838 as Chattanooga, which is derived from a Greek word for the close by Lookout Mountain, meaning "rock rising to a point." The area of Ross's Landing was incorporated as the city of Chattanooga In 1839. The settlement's rapid growth was stimulated by the arrival of the railroads in the 1840s and '50s after it initially developed as a river port. As a result, Chattanooga became a booming city. It was known as the site "where cotton meets corn," referring to its location along the cultural boundary between the cotton-growing states to the south and the mountain communities of southern Appalachia. During the Civil War, Chattanooga was the center of the battle. The city served as a hub connecting fifty percent of the Confederacy's arsenals, located in Columbus, Augusta, Macon, and Atlanta. It became a manufacturing and industry center as well as a central railroad hub. Since the start of the 21st century, Chattanooga has developed, attracting people from every part of the world.
