History Memphis Tennessee

Memphis, Tennessee, was initially occupied by Mississippian culture. The Chickasaw Indian tribe in the 17th century and the earliest European exploration included the Spanish Explorer Hernando de Soto. The City of Memphis was founded in 1819 and developed as a major trading center for Cotton.

In the 19th century, the population here suffered from yellow fever, and in 1878, thousands of its residents fled to escape the disease. By the 20th century, Cotton was still a major commodity, and Memphis became the world's largest cotton hardwood lumber market.
