History Memphis Tennessee

Memphis, Tennessee, was initially occupied by Mississippian culture. The Chickasaw Indian tribe in the 17th century and the earliest European exploration included the Spanish Explorer Hernando de Soto. The City of Memphis was founded in 1819 and developed as a major trading center for Cotton.

In the 19th century, the population here suffered from yellow fever, and in 1878, thousands of its residents fled to escape the disease. By the 20th century, Cotton was still a major commodity, and Memphis became the world's largest cotton hardwood lumber market. In the 1960s, it became a center of civil rights, where Martin Luther King Jr's assassination occurred in 1968.

Memphis is notable for its blues because some of the most famous musicians grow up around Memphis and others in the northern Mississippi area. These iconic musicians include Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Muddy Waters, and Isaac Hayes.
