History of St Louis County Missouri

History of St Louis County Missouri

Missouri State Capitol

After the French lost many of their New World colonies to the British, many of their colonists preferred to move west across the Mississippi to stay in French territory. These colonists founded the city of St. Louis in the 1700s. The region would become part of the US in 1803, as part of the Louisiana Purchase. That was when St. Louis County was formed.

However, in 1877, the city of St. Louis separated itself from the surrounding county. The county seat was moved to Clayton, Missouri, on land donated for that purpose by Ralph Clayton.

St. Louis County was named after the city of St. Louis, the original county seat. It was named after France’s King Louis IX, a crusader who was canonized as ‘Saint Louis’. This St. Louis was the patron saint of King Louis XV, who led the country during the colonization. Ultimately, though, there are several towns called ‘Saint Louis’ in France, and they would have been named for the same king-turned-saint.
