Springfield was originally the settlement area for the Kickapoo, Osage, and Lenape Indians. The Us Government enforced Indian removal from the area and relocated them to Kansas reserves. After Nathaniel created Greene county, small settlers began to occupy different parts, including Springfield, which received the most significant arrival. Arriving in Springfield was John Polk Campbell from Tennessee. Campbell established Junius Cambell's store and Jefferson Avenue before returning to Tennessee. The area then became a cabin settlement with other settlers invading the area. Springfield town was officially formed when John Campbell deeded 50 acres of the county seat. The city became the stop center of the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach line. This attracted more residents to the area.
