History of St. Louis County Missouri

Missouri State Capitol

When the French lost their New World colonies to the British, many of the French colonists moved west across the Mississippi River to be in French territory. These colonists founded the city of St. Louis in the 1700s. In 1803, the region would become part of the US as part of the Louisiana Purchase and this was when St. Louis County was formed.

In 1877, however, the city of St. Louis separated from the surrounding county and the county seat moved to Clayton, Missouri – land donated by Ralph Clayton.

St. Louis County was named after the city of St. Louis, the original county seat. The city of St. Louis was named after King Louis IX of France who was a crusader and was canonized as “Saint Louis.” This St. Louis was the patron saint of King Louis XV, who was in rule during the colonization. Interestingly enough, there are many small towns named “Saint Louis” in France, all which would have been named for the same king-turned-saint.
