History of Davenport

History of Davenport

iowa history

Before the European settlers occupied the today known Quad Cities, the area's early inhabitants were the Sauk and Fox Indians. The place was named in honor of Colonel George Davenport, one of the area's earliest settlers. The city was designated as an exceptional charter city and became the county seat of Scott county. The first factory was opened in Moline by John Deere to produce the first steel plow. This industry signaled the start of a robust manufacturing industry that is still in operation today. As a result of the industry, many German and Irish immigrants moved to the city, and it began to thrive. The successful completion of the first railroad bridge across the Mississippi River aided the city's growth. Three other significant railroads served the area, supporting the development of meatpacking, lumbering and furniture making industries. Over the subsequent decades, the industry base of Davenport grew swiftly. New businesses grew in the Downtown area leading to the city's overgrowing. Palatial estates were also constructed on the hilltops along the Mississippi River. Today, the city is home to over 350,000 residents with excellent tourist attraction centers, award-winning institutions, stable housing markets and strong businesses. The area is proud of its rich history and traditions, like River Vision which is the image of the modern Davenport.
