Before the European settlers occupied the today known Quad Cities, the area's early inhabitants were the Sauk and Fox Indians. The place was named in honor of Colonel George Davenport, one of the area's earliest settlers. The city was designated as an exceptional charter city and became the county seat of Scott county. The successful completion of the first railroad bridge across the Mississippi River aided the city's growth. Three other significant railroads served the area, supporting the development of meatpacking, lumbering and furniture making industries.
