History of Davenport

History of Davenport

iowa history

Davenport was Initially the home of the Native American people, the Sauk. However, Davenport underwent different ownership claims in its earliest years. First was a French possession and later sold off to the United States government under the Louisiana Purchase. However, the Sauk group-maintained ownership of the land until they were defeated in 1832 by the US, leading to an official purchase. The man responsible for the translation during the purchase, Antoine le Claire, is recognized as the founder of Davenport as he built his home on which the treaty was signed. He named the land Davenport in honor of his friend Colonel George Davenport. A similar fate of contestation would follow the establishment of Davenport as a city. Three elections that were marred with uncertainty were held in voting on whether Davenport or Rockingham should be the county seat of Scott County. Davenport finally became the county seat, which paved the way for the developments that made it a city. Through the 19th and 20th Centuries, Davenport’s growth was propelled by the construction of railway lines and industrialization. The significant resurgence of the city happened in the 1990s due to good planning, making it “The Great American Place.” The town has since become one of the most significant Quad cities.
