In 1694, Scots-Irish and Welsh settlers discovered Newark. However, it was officially established in 1758 after George II of Great Britain granted a charter. The history of Newark was greatly influenced by schools. In 1765, a grammar school established by Francis Alison moved to Newark and became the Newark Academy. Three of its first graduates, Thomas McKean, George Read, and James Smith, were among the signers of the Declaration of Independence. In the state of Delaware, there are schools that are named after McKean and Read, Thomas McKean High School, and George Read Middle School. In 1833, a new school was established after the granting of a charter. It was named Newark College. Newark College and Newark Academy merged together and became Delaware College. However, it was closed in 1859. But eleven years later, Delaware College was restored. In 1921, it was renamed to University of Delaware.

During the early years, the only industrial enterprise built in the area was a paper mill. Now, Newark’s industries have already expanded and include the manufacture of concrete products, vulcanized fiber, and processed foods as well as the assembly of automobiles.
