History of Newark

History of Newark

delaware history

Newark was first settled and founded by Welsh and Scots-Irish in 1694. They grew along two old Native American trails and the fall line where the White Clay Creeks and the Christina turn sharply eastward toward the Delaware River. The area began serving travelers on the route from the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, Maryland, and colonial Philadelphia. The American flag was first unfurled in a battle about two miles away at Cooch's Bridge, and a license was also sent to Newark to hold semi-annual fairs and weekly markets for agricultural exchange. In 1758, the town was given a charter by George II of Great Britain, which was when it was officially established and the town became incorporated as a city. While the national and regional economy suffered from oil price shocks in the 1970s and early 1980s, the city of Newark's growth stabilized. The city developed faster when the Stafford and Barksdale Estates communities were completed.
