Newark was first settled in 1694 by the Welsh and Scots Irish. Since then, the American flag has played a significant part in Newark's history. However, during the Battle of Cooch's Bridge, a battle between the British and American forces, the American flag was first unfurled. Between 1743 and 1765, Newark became prominent for its schools. During this time, signers of the Declaration of Independence, George Read and Thomas Kean, graduated from Newark Academy. This event led to the erection of their namesakes on the George Read Middle School and Thomas McKean High School. In 1758, Newark acquired its license to hold semi-annual fairs and weekly markets for agricultural exchange. King George II sanctioned this endeavor. In 1798, Newark experienced the first significant industrial venture in the form of a paper mill that stayed running until just before the turn of the 20th century. By 1837 Newark saw the establishment of the first Methodist church and the arrival of the railroads. In 1834, Newark Academy and Newark College joined to make one school called Delaware College. The college became the property of Delaware in 1913, leading to it being named the University of Delaware in 1921. The university is home to two museums, the Delaware Mineralogical Museum and the Paul R. Jones Collection of African American art. In the mid to late 1900s and early 2000s, Chrysler Newark Assembly, initially built to construct military tanks, was the primary source of industry and employment for Newark's residents. The company eventually branched out to produce a variety of automobiles and employed thousands of people until its closing in 2008.

Newark is in New Castle County in Delaware, U.S. The town forms part of The Wedge, which is a tripoint, a meeting of three states, namely Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.
