After the Newark Academy and Delaware College (now the University of Delaware) got founded in 1769 and 1833, the town also became an educational center. Newark continued to grow in the 19th and 20th centuries, with new neighborhoods like Trolley Square developing and the population reaching over 30,000 by the mid-20th century.
