In 1871, the Territorial Legislature created Maricopa County and the area has been experiencing growth and development ever since.

This county gets its name from the Maricopa tribe, who were among the first people to live here. There are a number of Native American reservations in Maricopa county including the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, the Gila River Indian Community, the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, and the Tohono O’odham Nation.

Maricopa County is the fastest-growing county in the USA, with data from the U.S. Census Bureau putting the Maricopa County metro area at an average of 291 people every day, or 86,820 in 2020. That’s more than any county in the USA! Of course, this county is also the most populous county in the state of Arizona, with more than half of Arizona’s population residing here.

So what’s drawing all of these people here? While Arizona is known as a popular destination for “snowbirds” to retire to once they’ve had enough of the colder, snowy months, Maricopa County has a number of thriving industries and excellent schools, including universities and high schools, making it a great place to relocate for work or to raise a family.

Maricopa County is also home to the prestigious Arizona State University (ASU), located in Phoenix. Some well-reviewed programs at ASU include management, public administration, environmental science and engineering, business administration, and economics.

July is typically the hottest month with an average high of 104.8°F. November is another pleasant month, which normally sees temperatures in the high 60s and mid-70s.
