It is surprising to find out that Chandler, Arizona is just 110 years old. The town was founded in 1912 by Dr. Alexander John Chandler after he acquired 18,000 acres of land around his own ranch known as “The Candler Ranch.” A year later in 1913, Chandler contained the first grass golf course in Arizona. Another year later in 1914, Chandler High School was built and in 1920 it was incorporated with the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors. By the 1950s, Chandler had a population of only 3,800 people, though it grew to more than 300,00 by the early 1980s. Since the 1980s, Chandler has grown at a steady pace to the rest of the Phoenix Metro Area, with new suburban residential areas having occupied most of the old agricultural land. Chandler became the fastest-growing municipality in the country by the 1990s, and was named an All-American City by the National Civic League in 2010.
