History
History
On June 7, 1763, the area of South Burlington was initially granted as part of a township of Burlington (a village at the time) by Benning Wentworth who was New Hampshire’s colonial governor. The grant was awarded to Samuel Willis and 63 other people and it was after 12 years that a few settlers trickled into the land and established a few homes. However, as the American Revolutionary War broke out across the nation, the settlement of the land was long delayed and it wasn’t until 1785 that the people finally established a permanent settlement and organized the town. South Burlington has since long benefited from its convenience on Lake Champlain. The lake's vicinity played a significant role in trade and served as a port of entry. Once the Champlain Canal was complete in 1823, the Erie Canal in 1825, and Chambly Lain in 1843 the city’s economy improved drastically.
