History of South Burlington
The city of South Burlington is over 150 years old, with excellent public schools, recreational centers, and happy, livable neighborhoods that keep growing. However, the town started from a humble background as part of the province of New Hampshire. In 1763, New Hampshire granted land to develop the Burlington township, which finally came into being in about 1785, followed by the constitution of the city of Burlington in 1865. In the same year, Vermont chartered South Burlington as a separate town from the remainder of Burlington. Residents held their first town meeting in South Burlington on March 7, 1865. In 1971, South Burlington graduated into a municipality, officially becoming the City of South Burlington by an act of incorporation. Dairy farming was the preferred economic activity at the time. Still, dairy farming later gave way to robust economic diversity with the arrival of railways and other infrastructural growth that propelled the city into prosperity. The area was also established as an academic community in the 1970s, followed by the South Burlington Community Library building in 1971. Its goal was to serve the growing community and the South Burlington school district. The citizens sustain the library through property taxes funded through the city budget. Since its inception, the citizens of South Burlington have always supported development and growth initiatives by investing in infrastructure and recreation areas such as the South Burlington Kiwanis Ski Area. Today, the city is a full-service community crowded with learning institutions, over 400 acres of parks, trails for recreation, and other splendid views.
