Rutland City’s history begins with establishing a small hamlet known as Mill Village situated at Otter Creek. The village started to grow in the early 19th century when the residents discovered small high-quality marble deposits. Marble quarrying began in the 1830s due to the discovery of a large deposit of nearly solid marble in the current location of West Rutland. Small firms started excavations in the 1840s. The railroad’s arrival in the 1850s made Rutland the railroad center of Vermont, and marble became significantly profitable. The region experienced commercial and industrial growth in the mid-19th century, and notable urbanization began in the late 1800s. For instance, Rutland became a cultural center of theater, music, and literature, and the locals started to appreciate art. Vermont Marble Company combined the marble interests into the world’s largest marble industry. Vermont incorporated Rutland as a city on November 18, 1892, and it grew into an important urban center in southern Vermont. The marble industry led to investment and growth in Rutland. Consequently, the Chamber of Commerce and local service clubs became active to improve the community. Although the marble quarries closed in the late 20th century, the city revolutionized itself culturally and economically. Rutland City is the seat of Rutland County, Vermont.
