Rutland traces its origin back to 1761. The city was initially conceded by Governor Benning Wentworth as one of the New Hampshire Grants. He named it after John Manners, the third Duke of Rutland. Rutland became the most successful of all those grants due to the exceptional farmland and gentle landform. In the 1830s, cosmic deposits of exceptional solid marble were discovered in Rutland and in the current West Rutland. This induced several firms to set up that embarked on mining marble. However, the firms were not as profitable till the railroad arrived in Rutland in 1851. During this period, Rutland became the leading producer of marble globally. This even replaced Carrara of Italy, the leading worldwide producer of marble at that time. The vast production of marble fueled rapid growth and investment in the city. The city continued to grow alongside many other new industries to the present-day Rutland.
