History of Louisiana

The history of Louisiana can be traced back thousands of years ago when indigenous people inhabited it. In the 18th century, the French colonized the "La Louisiane" area, named after the then king of France (Louis XIV of France). The territory became part of the U.S. after the historic Louisiana Purchase in 1803,  and doubled the size of the country during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson. Thirteen states were carved out of the purchased territory in 1812, with Louisiana being one.

Hurricane Katrina, which hit landfall in southeastern Louisiana in 2005, was the most destructive natural disaster in the history of the United States. The hurricane resulted in the death of over 1,800 people, with 1,500 of them being residents of Louisiana. Properties costing close to $100 billion were also damaged.

Louisiana is a state in the South Central and Deep Central regions of the United States. Its area of 52,069.13 square miles makes it the 20th-smallest by size, while its population of 4,657,757 makes it the 25th most populous of the 50 states. Arkansas borders the state to the north, Mississippi to the east, Texas to the west, and the Gulf of Mexico to the south. While most American states have counties, Louisiana is the only state with political subdivisions called parishes. Louisiana's state capital is Baton Rouge, while its largest city is New Orleans.

The state's racial makeup as of 2020 was 62.01% White, 32.22% Black or African American, 1.73% Asian, 0.57% Native Americans, and 1.44% of other races. Its population density also stood at 104.9 people per square mile. Of the region of 52,096 square miles, 43,601 is occupied by land, while water takes up the remaining 8,282.

While New Orleans is home to NBA Pelicans and Triple-A baseball teams, nothing comes close to the support the Saints football team receives. Clothed in black and gold, Saints fans fill the city air with chants of “Who Dat? Who Dat? Who Dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints?” Get into the stadium, and the atmosphere is phenomenal. There's only a lot we can tell; nothing compares to experiencing it yourself.

As far as college football, eighty miles east of New Orleans is Baton Rouge, home to the Tigers team who play in the Southeastern Conference and enjoy massive support. Other college football teams in the state include Grambling State Tiger, Loyola Wolf Park, Centenary Gentlemen, Tulane Green Wave, Southern Jaguars, and many more.
