History of Shreveport

History of Shreveport

Named for Captain Henry Miller Shreve, the town of Shreveport was formed and founded in 1836 along the banks of the confluence of the Red River and Texas trail. Captain Shreve was responsible for making the Red River navigable and removing a natural logjam obstructing the passage. Shreveport was initially and remains the seat of the Caddo Parish, a section of land purchased from the Caddo Native American tribes. The city quickly became a hub for steamboat commerce, mostly in cotton and agriculture. In its early days, Shreveport had a significant slave market that worked on the steamboats along the Red River. By 1860, the population consisted of 1,300 slaves and 2,200 free people. From the late 1880s until 1946, this city was home to the famous blues guitarist and singer Huddie William Leadbetter. He inspired the revival of the folk and blues musical movement in the fifties and sixties. The original 64 blocks of the city were listed in the National Register of Historic Places during the late 20th century, placing it second only to New Orleans for the most historical landmarks in Louisiana State. The Red River saw improvements in its navigation once again in the late 20th century, with the federal government initiating the construction of locks and dams. This initiative led to the redevelopment of the Shreveport-Bossier City into the shipping center of today. Although Shreveport residents have suffered due to the downturn in the city's oil industry, it has made efforts to improve opportunities for its people. For example, in the mid-1990s, the iconic riverboat gambling tourism industry came about in Shreveport due to efforts to improve the economy through this medium. The downtown areas were revitalized through this project and received a facelift, installing new sidewalks, public art pieces, and mosaics. In 2020, Advanced Aero Services planned to open a facility to increase job opportunities for its residents by the end of the decade.
