Located in the heart of Louisiana, Baton Rouge has a rich history that dates back to 1699, when French explorers first established a settlement along the banks of the Mississippi River. Originally known as Fort Louis de la Mobile, this outpost was established by Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville and his brother Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville. Over time, however, it came to be known simply as Baton Rouge - meaning "red stick" in French - due to a large red cypress tree located near the site. As time passed and more settlers arrived in what would become Louisiana, Baton Rouge gradually grew into a thriving community with its own unique identity. In 1817, it officially became the capital of Louisiana, and over the next few decades it continued to grow in size and importance.
