Before Europeans settled in the area in the 1700s, the region around Lake Erie was the territory of the Iroquois confederacy. It became Iroquois land after they took it from the Erie nation in the Beaver Wars of the 17th century. As soon as the French and English arrived, the two nations started fighting for the land. They often involved Native American proxies and allies in what was termed the “French and Indian War.” At the end of the 18th century, the land was eventually sold to the American government by the Iroquois and Seneca tribes, when it eventually became known as part of Pennsylvania.
