History of Fargo

north dakota history

The area that is now Fargo was part of the Sioux territory before European settlers came to the area. The Europeans used the area as a stopping point for steamboats on the Red River in the 1880s. The city was previously named “Centralia” before it was later changed to “Fargo.” “Fargo” comes from the Northern Pacific Railway director and Wells Fargo Express Company founder William Fargo. Fargo’s economy grew immensely after the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad. In the 1880s, Fargo was nicknamed “Divorce Capital” because of its soft divorce laws. In the early 20th century, several industries were established in Fargo, and the automobile industry was the most successful. Fargo continued to flourish after World War II, and even the violent F5 tornado in 1957 could not stop the economic growth. The completion of two interstates (I-29 and I-94) revolutionized travel in the city and pushed the development of Fargo further south and west of the city limits. Due to geographical constraints, residential houses have been developed in the south and southwest areas of the city. Real estate in Fargo is very diverse; you can find both old and newly developed houses across many neighborhoods in the city.
