History of Fargo

History of Fargo

north dakota history

The city's formation dates back to when the early settlers raised farm claims in the area where Northern Pacific Railroad would pass the Red River. Its stable economy was highly supported by the railroads. Fargo was named in honor of William G. Fargo, the manager of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The city began as a rowdy and rough frontier town characterized by its fair share of saloons and bordellos. The assurance of cheap and fertile agricultural land in the Red River Valley attracted more people to the area leading to a rapidly growing population. The population grew to 8,000 residents. The shanties and tents of the early period were replaced with wood-framed buildings. Unfortunately, a fire disaster struck the growing city, destroying most of the downtown area. When the fire ended, over 31 blocks had been reduced to piles of stones. Even if the fire was a stunning setback to the city, it was also the awakening era of modernity in Fargo. 246 new structures designed by fine regional designers had been constructed in a year. The post-fire city, a reflection of today's Fargo, became more attractive and substantial.
