History of Fargo

History of Fargo

north dakota history

The area that is now Fargo was historically part of Sioux (Dakota) territory and was an early halting site for steamboats across the Red River in the 1870s and 1880s. Fargo's initial name was "Centralia," but in the mid-19th century, it was renamed after William Fargo, the founder of both the Northern Pacific Railway and the Wells Fargo Express Company. Following the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad, the area began to flourish, becoming known as the "Gateway to the West." On June 7, 1893, a massive fire destroyed 31 blocks of downtown Fargo. However, this did little to dampen its development. They quickly rebuilt the city with new brick buildings, streets, and a water system. Within a year, more than 246 new buildings were constructed. The cause of the fire was the subject of various rumors. The speed with which they built new houses in the city is a testament to the power of its real estate industry. This makes buying a home in this city a safe investment.

There are also hundreds of outdoor ice skating rinks open to the public during the winter; most notable is the Broadway Square.

Explore The City's Art Museums
After you've experienced the above outdoor venues and done the things listed, it's time to bring your art appreciation indoors. The Plains Art Museum in Downtown Fargo and the Rourke Art Museum in Moorhead, North Dakota's largest art museum in the city, are both beautiful sights. Both exhibit carefully curated local, regional, national, and 'Midwest Modern' art and rotating exhibitions, and you can see these sights at no charge.

Window shopping is a therapeutic activity that can temporarily calm and forget your troubles. Fargo's downtown has several boutiques and stores selling locally-made goods, making it perfect for window shopping. Unglued and Zandbroz Variety are located on Broadway's main street and sell Fargo and Midwest-related products and extraordinary oddities. The various backstreets have a ton of local clothing boutiques and some antique and thrift shops.

Take In The Unique Sunset of The Fargo Skyline
Instead of a traditional skyline, Fargo's skyline offers a series of breathtaking sunrises and sunsets. While it may not be the place to ski or climb, it does make for spectacular sunset views. You'll also notice that there aren't many tall buildings in the city; it is easier to build out than up because of the valley's fertile soil. As a result, residents enjoy watching these incredible light shows. Buying a house here will guarantee you a lifetime of great views and all the city's other amenities.
