Rio Rancho is the largest and only city in Sandoval County, New Mexico, and it is part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area. It is also the third-largest city in New Mexico, United States, with part of its portion extending into the northern region of Bernalillo County. The city is centrally located in the state, 12 miles north of Albuquerque. It also lies in the Albuquerque Basin to the west of the Rio Grande, which serves as the boundary on the city's northeast corner.
