History of Manchester

History of Manchester

new hampshire history

Manchester, NH, was founded in the early 1700s and was initially known as Derryfield before officials attended to its incorporation in 1752. Manchester was given its current name in 1810 and established as a city in 1846. Consequently, it was dubbed "New England's Elm City" and "New Hampshire's Queen City." It's impossible to tell the early history of Manchester without including New Hampshire. The colony of towns along the New Hampshire shoreline began in the 1600s. However, the settlement of the interior and upland areas of New Hampshire did not start in earnest until 1760, when the long war with the French and their Native American allies concluded. Not only had the threat of Native American retaliation disappeared, but the colony's population had grown to the extent where it could support an expanding frontier. New Hampshire sustained only 12,500 people in 1732, after more than 100 years of English rule. After 1760, this changed dramatically - between 1760 and 1775, authorities created 89 new towns while subdividing 19 others. The first inhabitants in the area, known as Manchester, New Hampshire, were a group of Scots-Irish. They left their homes in Londonderry, Ireland, on August 4, 1718, to begin a new life in Boston, Massachusetts. Sixteen families were among the five shiploads of immigrants who left Haverhill, Massachusetts, for Nutfield, New Hampshire. They secured a title dated October 20, 1719, from John, the grandson of Rev. John Wheelwright, conveying a parcel of property ten miles square. This area was known as "chestnut country" due to the profusion of chestnut trees, which also gave Londonderry its name of "Nutfield."
