History of Massachusetts

Created in 1643 by Massachusetts General Court, Middlesex is one of Massachusetts’s three original counties. The county only included eight cities at inception, but it has increased to thirteen over time. On April 19, 1775, Middlesex cities Lexington and Concord were the first sites of the American Revolutionary War.

Middlesex city Lowell was one of the major centers of the Industrial Revolution in the mid-1800s. This drew many immigrants to Middlesex to work in the mills, especially French-Canadian and Irish immigrants.

As of 2020, Middlesex County had a population of 1,632,002, making it the 22nd most populous county. The county is also the most populous in Massachusetts. The racial makeup of its population was 80% White, 9.3% Asian, 4.7% black or African American, 0.2% American Indian and 5.8% for other cities. The county has 847 square miles, with land taking up 818 square miles and water taking up 29 square miles.

Middlesex County has a wide range of recreational parks for adults and children. Constructed in 1991 and rebuilt in 2016, the Castle in the Trees is a park with two playgrounds, swings and bouncers for children to have fun. Another popular park in the county is Mary Cummings Park. The Mary Cummings Park has 216-acre of space and accessible trails for use. Some of the other parks in the county are Wilson Park, Fellsmere Park, and Warren H Manning State Forest.
