History

Worcester, MA, was founded in 1722 as a small town. It was regarded as the "heart of commonwealth" after earning the status of a county town in 1731. Once it demonstrated acceptable standards, officials incorporated it in 1848. Despite this late development, Worcester can trace its heritage to the 1600s. The town's emergence began with the habitation of the Nipmuc tribe, who called it "Quinsigamond." They built their settlements around Pakachoag Hill, and in 1673, English settlers came and set up Quinsigamond as a praying town for Christians and Indians. This area became an English settlement in 1674 after Daniel Gookin obtained a title deed for 8 square miles of Quinsigamond land from the Nipmuc tribe. He and others established it as a combined trading center and English settlement. Unfortunately, Indian forces completely razed it to the ground in 1675 after the breakout of King Phillip's war. Then, again, it came under attack in 1702 during Queen Anne's war. In 1713, an English settler, Jonas Rice, permanently settled the land, and it was named "Worcester," similar to Worcester city in England. The town was incorporated into the commonwealth and fully established as a county in 1731. Worcester became a center for studies that majored in American revolutionary activities in the 1770s. The city obtained its independence in 1776 after British General Thomas Gage made certain declarations while standing on the porch of Old South Church, the location of the current Worcester City Hall. In the 19th century, Worcester became an established manufacturing hub. Business owners set up major factories dealing with shoes, clothing, and textiles near the Blackstone River. The manufacturing sector started thriving after completing the Blackstone Canal in 1828 and the Worcester and Boston Railroad in 1835. Later, Worcester experienced exponential growth after major investors renewed their interest in the town. As a result, investors developed significant infrastructures such as the Convention Center, Worcester Union Station, Hanover Theater, and Gateway Park at Lincoln Square.
