History

History

massachusetts history

Springfield has a rich history which is just as amusing to read or listen to as most other Massachusetts cities. The city came into existence in 1936 when William Pynchon bought the land from the native Indians. Pynchon, who was an English Puritan, would then use the land for trading and fur-collecting posts. Pynchon named the city in the honor of his hometown, which was Springfield, Essex, England. Springfield was officially established as a city in 1852. Springfield’s economy was initially led by the fur-collecting trade along with its agricultural industry. In the late eighteenth century, mills were built to harness the power of the Connecticut River which brought more labor and job opportunities. It was in the nineteenth century that the city experienced its first industrial boom. As the industrial boom attracted affluent people to the city, it ultimately added to the education system of the city making it more notable throughout the region.
