History

The city also saw two innovations, the Boards of Trade’s wheat grading standards and grain elevators, which transformed the selling of crops. The city became the world’s largest grain port by 1854, and it had over 30,000 people who were mainly European immigrants. Chicago experienced social, economic, and population increase from the late 19th century because of developments such as a booming retail industry, the construction of the world’s first skyscraper, and hosting the World’s Columbian Exposition.
