History of Chicago

History of Chicago

 Union Station Chicago

The Potawatomi inhabited the area in the mid-18th century, a Native American tribe who had succeeded the Miami, Fox, and Sauk peoples in this region. Jean Baptiste Point du Sable was known as a trader who was the first non-indigenous permanent settler in Chicago. In the 1780s, Du Sable established the area and was known as the "Founder of Chicago." The city of Chicago was incorporated as a town on August 12, 1833. About four years later, it was incorporated as a city on March 4, 1837, near a portage between the Mississippi River watershed and the Great Lakes. Chicago has been one of the ruling metropolises in the Midwestern United States since the 1850s. The Great Chicago fire destroyed several square miles in 1871, rendering more than 100,000 residents homeless. The city's population grew to over 503,000 in 1880 and then over a million within the decade. Mind you, Chicago was the youngest U.S. city to surpass a population of 100,000. Less than 30 years after the great fire, Chicago became the fifth-largest city globally, and since the 1880 census, it has been the largest city in the Midwest. "Chicago" is derived from a French rendition of the Native American word "shikaakwa," which means onion or striped skunk. The early explorers of Chicago claim that the bank of the short Chicago River was full of ramps, wild leeks, and onions. Throughout the history of Chicago, the city has had various other nicknames such as Chi-Town, Second City, Windy City, and City of the Big Shoulders. Chicago's thriving economy attracted many new immigrants from Eastern and Central Europe, especially Poles, Jews, Italians, and many smaller groups.
