Until European settlers arrived, the area was home to an Indian hamlet called Poquonock. The name was kept until 1694, even though it was spelled Pequonnock, after the arrival of the first white immigrants in 1639. Fairfield Village was founded in 1694, Stratfield was founded in 1701, and Bridgeport was established in 1800. The name pays homage to the Pequonnock River's first drawbridge. In 1821, the township was formed, and the city was formed in 1836. In 1865, Elias Howe, an early sewing machine designer, founded the Howe Machine Company in Bridgeport. On the other hand, Bridgeport's placement in the deep Black Rock Harbor aided shipbuilding and whaling in the mid-nineteenth century.
