History of Fort Collins

History of Fort Collins

colorado history

Until the early 1800s, the region around what would later become Fort Collins was the territory of the Northern Arapaho people. These people initially welcomed settlers of European descent, however, they were later pushed out by force in the 1860s. Fort Collins, as an outpost of the US Army, was intended to protect settlers and the mail route into the area. In 1867, the fort itself was decommissioned but a small town had already risen up around it.

The town of Fort Collins was incorporated in 1873. In 1879, classes began at the Fort Collins Agricultural College, and by the 1900s the local economy grew based on stone quarrying, beet farming, sugar processing and livestock rearing.
