In 1862, the ninth Kansas Volunteer Cavalry constructed Camp Collins to provide protection to the settlers and travelers along the Overland Trail. In June 1864, a flood forced the soldiers to seek higher ground. After less than three years, the fort was deserted. In 1872, a school, a post office, a small hotel, a brickyard, a mill, and a general store occupied the former fort site. In 1877, the Colorado Central Railroad arrived in Fort Collins and the area became a center for the agricultural industry. The Colorado Agricultural & Mechanical College built their first building. In 1879, the school was renamed to Old Main, boosting the economy and culture of Fort Collins. In 1957, the school was called Colorado State University. For hundreds of years, Fort Collins was used as a crossroad for French trappers, native tribes, miners, military forces, and western travelers.
