Fayetteville Female Seminary, a school built in 1839, is the oldest public institution in the region. Arkansas College, an institution that suffered significant damage in the 1852 civil war, was the first degree-granting college in the state. The establishment of major learning institutions in the early years contributed to the city's massive development.
